I'm in the base phase of my training for a half marathon and I just this week started adding more sprint training into my runs. I'm doing this by running a fartlek run every once in awhile as well as some hill sprints once a week. Also on a few of my easier training runs through the week I am adding some strides at the end. Hopefully this will help improve my speed and fitness.

I know, there's something to be said for sprinting at max intensity beyond what the science and coaches say. Aside from all the benefits, it just feels so GOOD!

Great article Fitz. You are right, there really is something about sprinting that is just primal and natural. I always joke that I imagine I'm being chased by a grizzly bear when I go running, but there is definitely something to it. It's an exhilarating feeling to go running as fast as I can up through the trails in the woods.
